Explore Oil's Link to Security Nov. 14
Recognizing that energy security is a central component of national security, the UNLV Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is launching an Energy Security Policy program.
To kick off the program, the ISS is hosting both a morning roundtable discussion and a luncheon Nov. 14 at the Renaissance Hotel, 3400 Paradise Road.
Roundtable and Luncheon
The morning roundtable discussion, "Reducing U.S. Dependence on Foreign Oil: Lessons from Abroad," will feature a panel of international energy policy and scientific experts including:
- Lord David Howell, foreign policy spokesman, Conservative Party, United Kingdom
- Professor Tatsuo Masuda, adviser to the chairman of Japan Petroleum Exploration
- Ian Walker, executive director, Windsor Energy Group
- Oliver Hemmers, director of the UNLV office of strategic energy programs
- Dennis Pirages, UNLV political science professor
The panel discussion will be moderated by Jack Caravelli, former director for nonproliferation, National Security Council, and author of Nuclear Insecurity.
The roundtable discussion is free and open to the public. Go to
iss.unlv.edu/cesp/registration to reserve your spot.
Following the roundtable, ISS will host a luncheon, during which Caravelli will present, "Energy Security Challenges Facing the Next Administration." The seated luncheon is $40. Reservations are required in advance at iss.unlv.edu/cesp/registration.
Independent Research
This initiative seeks to produce research that:
- sheds light on the geo-political and economic implications of pursuing a balanced and secure national energy strategy
- assesses the true costs and challenges of securing access to energy resources
- helps policymakers devise solutions for plentiful, secure, and reasonably priced energy
Nancy Brune, ISS director of research and outreach, will head the Energy Security Policy program. Hemmers and Pirages will serve as senior advisors.
