Keep the Silver State Sparkling Clean
UNLV's Public Lands Institute (PLI) won a national Take Pride in America Award for its effort to clean up litter and discourage illegal dumping in Southern Nevada.
Community members can help the PLI continue to keep Nevada clean by volunteering for the 2008 Make a Difference Day on Oct. 25. The event, which is at the Red Rock National Conservation Area, begins at 8 a.m. Projects include:
- maintaining trails
- trimming vegetation
- installing trail markers
- replacing trail benches
- installing barrier posts
- removing trash and grafitti
- painting
After the clean up, stay for a free barbecue lunch with entertainment from local band Traffic Jam.
Register for the event online at getoutdoorsnevada.org.
In partnership with several government agencies, the institute has organized 2,857 volunteers to remove 3,713 cubic yards of waste from public lands since 2005. The institute also launched the "Don't Trash Nevada" campaign to raise awareness about hazards of desert dumping.
